Michigan Technological University is located in Houghton, MI. No, it's nowhere near Detroit. Go find a map of Michigan. Now look at the OTHER page, the one with the Upper Peninsula on it. Over to the west, there's a finger of land that sticks out into the middle of Lake Superior. Houghton (and Tech) is located about half-way up that finger of land -- just follow US-41 or MI-26 north until you get there.

Tech is what used to be called a "manly man's university". In this politically correct day and age, however, it's probably called something else, most likely obscene or at the very least, uncouth. It's a tough school, boasting tough curricula, and the majority of folks take 5 years to finish a bachelor's. The challenge presented by the coursework is exceeded only by the challenge presented by the weather; Tech's school year boasts a glorious fall (September) and spring (May) separated by nearly seven months of winter... The good thing about the winters at Tech is that Lake Superior keeps the region about 20 degrees warmer than other parts of the Midwest at the same latitude. The bad thing about the winters at Tech is that this relative warmth of Lake Superior causes a truckload of snow (typically at least 250, that's right, TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY inches of snow a year.) After five winters at Tech, you'll sneer at winter nearly anywhere else on the planet.
